With limited treatment options for obesity, the COURAGE clinical research study is currently underway to investigate potential treatments. Consider the COURAGE study as an opportunity for your patients with obesity to access investigational treatments.
COURAGE is a phase 2 clinical study for adults with obesity. This study is assessing the effect of adding one or two study drugs to semaglutide, versus semaglutide monotherapy.
COURAGE will last about 20 months. Over the course of the study, the study drugs, an approved drug, and/or a placebo will be administered as an intravenous or subcutaneous injection for about 6 months. The study drugs are both monoclonal antibodies. One of the study drugs works by targeting myostatin to block its functions and prevent muscle wasting. The other study drug blocks the protein Activin A, also to prevent muscle wasting.
Please note that the safety and efficacy of the study drug has not been fully evaluated by Regulatory Authorities.
Patients are expected to participate in this study for approximately 20 months. During the study, participants will have approximately 18 study visits. Qualified participants will be compensated for their participation after the completion of each visit.

How can you help?
COURAGE is enrolling approximately 600 people with obesity in the United States and Puerto Rico. The success of COURAGE depends on physicians to refer potential study participants.
Your patients may be eligible if they:
- Are 18 to 80 years of age
- Have a BMI of more than 30
- Have a history of 1 or more self-reported unsuccessful dietary attempts to lose weight
Your patients might not be eligible if they:
- Have a history of diabetes (history of gestational diabetes is OK)
- Previous bariatric surgery or planned bariatric surgery
- History of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
- Have a history of poorly controlled high blood pressure
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Please note: Other protocol-defined inclusion/exclusion criteria apply.
The study team will check your patient’s full medical history to see if they meet all inclusion criteria and none of the exclusion criteria. Diversity in clinical studies is critical to developing better treatments – help ensure that your patients are represented.
If you have potentially eligible and interested patients, empower them with a potential option and discuss the COURAGE study. You may also contact the nearest study site to refer them.
